Cal was walking around the cabin, and was talking on a radio to someone. "No, she's not here and the door is locked. There's no sign of any damage so it seems that she's gone out for a walk or on the lake. I didn't see her dinghy moored at the jetty..." Just then, Cal looked up and noticed Meredith walking towards him. "Meredith. Thank goodness you're safe!" Quizzically, Meredith glanced at Cal, before she asked, "What's going on Cal? Who were you talking to?" Cal took a deep breath, and said calmly, "I will explain everything, but I think we ought to get you inside, quickly." Meredith went to the cabin door and unlocked it with her key. She entered the cabin, and Cal followed her, pulling the door closed behind him. "You might want to sit down, Mere...What I'm going to tell you will be distressing." Meredith looked at Cal questioningly but sat down. She heard the gravity in his voice and knew he was serious. "You know those young women, who were found dead a few months back? Turns out there is a serial killer involved. Forensics found DNA evidence from two of the bodies. They'd been raped and murdered. The killer is this guy." Cal produced a photo of the suspect. Looking at it, Meredith felt the blood drain from her face. A cold chill struck her, and she choked out, "Oh my word. I have spent the past couple of days with him; his name is Tim. A couple of nights ago when it was the full-moon, something strange happened to him." Looking up from the photo, Meredith addressed Cal earnestly, and asked, "who were you talking to on the radio?" Cal cleared his throat and revealed, "as soon as I got the DNA profile and we traced him to the forest here, I drove out to find you. On my way into the park, I stopped by the Ranger's Quarters and asked them for a radio since I was alone and knew the signal would be patchy." Cal paused, then a confused look spread over his face, "You said his name is Tim...We have on file that the suspect is called 'Steve.' I suppose he could have told you a false name... Trailing off, Cal was interrupted by a knock at the door. "Meredith, are you ok? Is something wrong with your mum? You left in such a hurry and forgot your phone." Tim called out. Cal looked at Meredith in alarm, and mouthed, "Is that him?" Cal gestured to Meredith to answer, but not to open the door. "Tim, yes, my mum collapsed earlier. I just had a feeling something was amiss. Please can you leave my phone by the door? I'll get it once I've had something to eat." "Ok. Meredith, I'll leave you to it this evening. Maybe I'll catch you tomorrow." Tim sounded despondent. Meredith heard the sadness in his voice, and questioned the thought rushing through her mind, 'he's a cold-blooded killer? He knows how to manipulate his victims.' The final word made her shudder. Was Tim planning to kill her? Had he become more perverse, wanting to draw it out for prolonged gratification? After Tim had gone, Meredith turned to Cal, "there's something you need to know about Tim..." Feeling light-headed, Meredith swayed. Cal steadied her with his hand. "Let's sit down and I'll get you something warm and sweet to drink. You are going into shock." Meredith gave Cal a thin smile and agreed, "yes, this has been a lot to process. Would you be able to stay over tonight? I need to tell you what happened the night of the full-moon." Cal smiled warmly at Meredith. "Of course I will, Mere. You oughtn't to be alone. Not while he's here." Meanwhile, a pair of silver-flecked eyes were peering in through the window. A shadowy figure was hunched outside the front of the cabin, waiting.
